On Friday afternoon, I visited the seaside. The 'N' Muni "subway" line, only actually underground in the centre of San Francisco, runs all the way out to Ocean Beach next to Golden Gate Park, so it's easy to get to, although it takes a surprising amount of time to get there (nearly an hour)
The beaches are wide, sandy and very soft. It is difficult to walk across as you sink into the sand at every step. Nearer to the water, it's a lot firmer, though. I was able to paddle in the Pacific Ocean, although I had to be careful, as I saw some little things on the beach that looked like they might be jellyfish! Then I found something that was huge! It was about the size of a dinner plate.
I also saw some tiny birds that were feeding on things that they could dig up where the waves were washing over the sand. Clearly, they didn't like getting wet, but rather than fly off, as the wave broke and the water raced towards them, they would run very quickly - their legs blurred at the speed of the run - until they reached safety, before turning around and heading back to the next meal.
