You often get tailgating at US sports events, but a variation here is that people were selling hot dogs, burgers and tacos either directly from the boot of their cars/trucks or from portable BBQs that they had set up all along the kerbside!
It looks like this could be just their entire businesses, selling fast food to tourists at the lookout point.
I carried on along the road, down the winding road into Sausalito, although there was only a painted line to separate the walking and cycling area from the main road, which wasn't great. I passed an Australian tourist who was coming up the hill, who encouraged me to keep going, letting me know I was only 20 minutes away from the town!
The town is pretty (there are lots more photos in my album) and there are several places to eat. I had lunch at The Trident, which has a seating area on a verandah area overlooking the bay, which wasThere are a couple of different ferries that run back to San Francisco. One goes to the ferry terminal and one goes to Pier 41, which is near my hotel, so that's the one I took. There are so many different ferry companies operating out of San Francisco. I note that since my last stay here, the Alcatraz trips are handled by their own ferry company instead of being fought over by the Red & White and the Blue & Gold fleets.
You do get very good view of Alcatraz and the other sights of the bay as you sail across. It takes half an hour, which is s surprisingly long time for what looks like such a short distance.
